The versatile pianist and conductor Elda Laro is currently employed as repetiteur at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. She joined the company in 2016, having been Head of Music at the theatre of Münster for three seasons. She enjoys a developing relationship with the Albanian National Opera, Tirana, having conducted three concerts of Orff´s Carmina Burana in 2015 as well as Bellini´s “Capuleti et Montecchi in 2016.

Elda Laro began her musical career as a solo pianist, working with orchestras including the Orchestra del Teatro Regio Turin, the Orchestra della Val d‘Aosta, Orchestra Arturo Toscanini and the RTSH Orchester Tirana. She has also concertised extensively throughout Europe, Japan, Malaysia and the U.S.A, working also with conductors such as Marc Soustrot, Konrad Junghänel, Bruno Campanella, Donato Renzetti, Gustav Kuhn and Mstislav Rostropovich.

Her love of Bel Canto Opera has led her to work extensively with the great opera literature. After graduating from the Academy of La Scala Milan in 1998, she worked as a repetiteur in many opera houses and festivals in Italy and beyond, such as the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, the Tiroler Festspielen/Erl, the Teatro Regio di Torino, the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini di Parma, the Ravenna Festival and the Festival d‘Aix-en-Provence. This work brought her into contact with such renowned vocal artists as Giuseppe Giacomini, Mirella Freni, Carlo Bergonzi, Roberto Alagna, Renato Bruson, Fiorenza Cossotto and Edda Moser. She has also given concerts with artists such as Ermonela Jaho (National Opera Tirana), Dimitra Theodossiu (Wigmore Hall, London) und Justine Viani (Athletic Club, New York City).

Born in Scutari, Albania, Elda Laro began her musical education with Fatmira Pelushi and Margarita Kristidhi at the Music Academy of Tirana. She continued her studies in Turin as a scholarship student of Remo Remoli at the Conservatorio Guiseppe Verdi, and furthermore in Paris with Claude Hellfer and Salzburg with Alfons Kontarsy. She has been studying conducting for a number of years with the renowned conductor Prof. Rüdiger Bohn at the Conservatory of Düsseldorf.

Elda Laro has won numerous prizes in her career, including: First Prize (trio) at Concorso di Moncalieri, Turin (1991); First Prize (duo) at Rassegno die Vittorio Veneto (1996); and First Prize at the Concorso di Grosseto (2000). In 2009 she was honoured by the Amici della Musica di Catania with the ‘Premio Danzuso’. Elda Laro remains much in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. Her recently released CD of chamber music by Bottesini, on the Chandos label, received a five star review in the London Financial Times.

Brahms Requiem

The nine-day Musica Sacra Festival opened with Brahms to an audience of around two thousand listeners. They witnessed a performance of great intensity, thanks to the interpretation of two groups: the Konzertchor Münster, and the city’s Philharmonic Choir. The sound streaming forth from the massive chorus platform was simply phenomenal.

Elda Laro, head of music staff, was the fourth leather-clad dominatrix onstage, feeding the forces of darkness with her brightly-ringing harpsichord. She is able to make the listener believe that Mozart himself wanders in occasionally to amuse himself.

Operatic Concert in Theater Münster

What would this engaging evening have been without Elda Laro at the piano? Without this musician, whose sensitivity and precisely adjusted dynamic provided all the support a singer could ever need. This was virtuosity unveiled.

“The Black Garden” Dance Ensemble, Theater Münster.

The most spell-binding performance of the evening, however, was provided by the theatre’s head of music staff, Elda Laro. She plays the insanely difficult incidental music from Rachmaninoff’s piano works, all 90 minutes of it, live. Had the dancers not surrounded her Steinway from time to time as part of their choreography, we might not have known she was there – her performance was as immaculate as a studio recording. The artists were rewarded with exuberant applause.
